FOLLY BEACH
Island Information for the Charleston, SC Area
FOLLY BEACH
Folly Beach is the closest beach to historic Charleston, SC. It is also the beach where one spots surfers hanging out more regularly, and therefore, it has a little more of that "beach bum" feel around center. But don't let that distract you, because this little town is filled with goodies from wine bars to pizza parlors.
The island is an incorporated town. There are two seaside county parks, one is a public park located on the southern tip of the island with a boat ramp. On the northern tip one can hike out to a more remote beach. In the middle is a magnificent public fishing pier.
With six miles of beach front on one side and six miles of river and marsh front on the other, Folly Beach is a favored address for anyone seeking great views. Most of the Folly Beach area is residential , and the island is a haven for nesting turtles and shorebirds. Outdoor recreation is big on Folly, and annual events include ocean sportfishing from the pier, major surfing competitions on the rugged beach area known as the "washout", and a colorful parade of home-made vessels on the Folly River.
